π What If Your Volunteer Fire Department Disappeared Tomorrow?
When you call 911, you expect someone to respond. But what happens when there aren’t enough volunteers left to answer the call?
In Pennsylvania, approximately 96.5% of registered fire departments are entirely or mostly volunteer.
Now consider the financial impact.
A Lebanon County fire company estimated that staffing a small fire department 24/7 could cost approximately $1.2 million annually.
If that cost were shared equally:
β’ A rural community with 1,500 households would face approximately $800 per household annually.
β’ A more populated community with 6,000 households would face approximately $200 per household annually.
These are simplified examples, not actual tax projections. But they illustrate why replacing volunteers can create a significant financial burden for smaller communities.
This isn’t about career versus volunteer firefighters. Both are essential, and many departments rely on a combination of paid personnel, volunteers, and mutual aid.
It’s about understanding what makes sense for each community and what happens when volunteer recruitment and retention fail.
And remember, volunteering doesn’t always mean fighting fires. Departments need fire police, administrative help, fundraising support, and community involvement.
The emergencies won’t stop because the volunteers are gone.
So here’s my question:
If your community lost its volunteer fire department tomorrow, do you know who would respond when you called 911, and what it might cost to replace that service?
